Automobile Wreck Causes Two Deaths

Maury Flowers and A.V. Bunch Killed When Car Overturns--Merrill Cherry, Badly Hurt, Now In Hospital

Two young men are dead and two more are in the hospital, one of them in critical condition, as the result of an auto accident at 11 o'clock last night on "Dead Man's Curve" north of the Granby street bridge.

A fifth occupant of the auto in which the five were riding escaped with cuts and bruises. The fatal mishap occurred when the roadster in which the young men were returning from Ocean View turned turtle twice after failing to make the turn which has been the scene of a large number of serious accidents.

Dead and Injured

The dead: Maury Flowers, sixteen-year-old student of Blair High school, and A.V. Bunch, Eighteen-year-old enlisted man attached to the Naval Operating Base. Flowers, riding in the rumble seat, received a broken neck, and Bunch, said to have been the driver, receiving a fractured skull.

The injured: Merrill Cherry, fifteen, of 709 West Twenty-eighth street, possible fracture of the skull: Samuel Carter, of Portland, Maine, owner of the roadster, severe lacerations about the head and body, and John Brock, sixteen, of 108 East Twenty-ninth street, who escaped with slight cuts and bruises. Cherry and Carter were confined to St. Vincent's hospital today, and Brock was removed to his home after receiving first aid treatment for his injuries.

Eyewitnesses told police who investigated, that the roadster was traveling at a high rate of speed as it approached the curve, and that it went suddenly to one side of the road as the driver apparently made a desperate attempt to bring the car under control. Leaving the road, the car turned over twice, coming to rest on its wheels with its headlights pointing toward Ocean View. The machine was wrecked.

Tells of Accident

Young Brock told investigating officers that he remembered nothing after hitting the curve until he found himself staggering about in the middle of the road. Passing motorists took him, together with Flowers, Carter and Cherry to the hospital. At the hospital it was discovered Flowers was dead. The body of Bunch was left at the scene of the accident until arrival of Dr. C. D. J. MacDonald, city coroner.

Police were told by Brock that he and Flowers and Cherry had hitchhiked to Ocean View earlier in the night, had stayed at the resort for several hours and then had tried to obtain a ride back to town. Several autos had passed them up, he said, but later a roadster stopped and the three youths climbed into the rumble seat.

Carter, questioned at the hospital, said that he was the owner of the roadster, and that he was driving south from Boston, but denied, that he had been behind the wheel when the accident occurred.

Inquests in the deaths of Flowers and Bunch will be held next Tuesday.

Bunch's address was 4628 Ninth street, N. W., Washington, D. C.

His father's name is listed as John I. Bunch, Atlanta, Ga.

Maury Joseph Flowers, son of Joseph and Caterina Delmastro Flowers, was a student at Blair Junior High school, and an altar boy at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Besides his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Misses Rosa, Virginia, and Amelia Flowers; three brothers, Michael, Nicholas, and Ned Flowers.

The body will be taken from the residence, 627 West Twenty-ninth street, to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, for funeral services Friday morning at 10 o'clock. Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery.

When the project runs into a mess or the investment fails to meet the benchmark rate of return, we are looking for the person who is responsible for the decision and control on the execution.

The person suddenly disappears like an invisible man and nobody claims the responsibility. This is the invisible man in the corporate boardroom.
